Single-Sex Classes at ɫèֱ²¥

The ɫèֱ²¥ Model in the Middle Years (Years 7-9)
Most schools take a single approach to learning in the Middle Years - either fully single-sex or fully co-educational.
At ɫèֱ²¥, we believe students benefit from a more balanced approach to education.
The ɫèֱ²¥ Model is our distinctive approach to learning in Years 7–9, combining the benefits of single-sex classes with the social strengths of a co-educational school. Students are taught in single-sex settings for selected core subjects - English, Science, and Health and Physical Education - while continuing to learn, collaborate and connect in co-educational classes, co-curricular programs and all social aspects of school life.
As an independent co-educational school in Melbourne, ɫèֱ²¥ has designed this model to support students academically, socially and emotionally during the Middle Years of schooling.
Sometimes described in educational research as a form of parallel or blended education, the ɫèֱ²¥ Model is a balanced, evidence-informed approach designed to support students during one of the most important and formative stages of adolescent development.
Why the Middle Years Matter
The Middle Years of schooling are a time of significant cognitive, social and emotional change. During early adolescence, students’ confidence, identity and academic self-belief are strongly shaped, influencing engagement, wellbeing and learning outcomes well beyond these years.
Educational research into adolescent learning shows that classroom dynamics in Years 7–9 can affect participation, subject confidence and academic risk-taking. Studies exploring social pressure and stereotype threat suggest that, in some subjects, single-sex learning environments may help students - particularly girls in STEM-related subjects and boys in literacy-focused areas - to engage more confidently and participate more actively in learning.
At ɫèֱ²¥, we apply this research selectively and purposefully, using single-sex classes where they are most likely to support student confidence, engagement and positive academic outcomes.
Teaching That Responds to How Students Learn
Students in the Middle Years often respond differently to classroom discussion, collaboration and feedback. Teaching approaches that recognise these developmental differences can make a meaningful impact on confidence, motivation and engagement.
Single-sex learning environments provide teachers with greater flexibility to tailor learning experiences, discussion styles and classroom dynamics to suit both male and female students at this stage of development.
This approach is not about limiting opportunity - it is about strengthening academic foundations and supporting individual learning needs.
Across all subjects, students continue to experience high expectations, academic rigour and personalised teaching within small class environments that support focus, growth and independence.
Confidence Without Compromise
Educational psychology research shows that social expectations and classroom pressures can influence student performance, particularly during adolescence. When students feel comfortable and supported in their learning environment, they are more likely to participate actively, ask questions and take intellectual risks.
The ɫèֱ²¥ Model creates space for confidence to grow - while preserving the collaborative culture of a co-educational learning environment.
Students continue to work together daily in co-educational classes, including Mathematics and Humanities, developing social confidence, empathy and strong interpersonal skills that are essential for life beyond school and future learning pathways.
A Proudly Co-Educational School
ɫèֱ²¥ is a proudly co-educational school offering a connected learning journey from Early Learning through to Year 12.
While selected subjects are taught in single-sex settings during Years 7–9, students learn together across Mathematics - where tailored pathways support challenge and progression - as well as Humanities, Languages, Technologies, and Visual and Performing Arts.
Students also come together through wellbeing programs, leadership opportunities, co-curricular activities, camps, assemblies and social time, ensuring a strong sense of belonging and community.
This balanced approach prepares students not only academically, but socially - equipping them to navigate diverse environments and perspectives with confidence and respect.
The ɫèֱ²¥ Model is not about choosing between single-sex or co-educational education. It is about drawing on the strengths of both to support student learning and development.
